NutriTips | Get the Kids Involved in Meal Prep

Getting children involved in making meals not only prepares them to be self-sufficient later in life, but also allows them to learn about healthy eating habits directly from you. 

Here are a few ways you can get kids involved:

  1. Let them help in meal planning

    Encourage your child’s interest in food by including their favourite fruit, vegetable, or their preferred dish in your weekly meal plan. This allows them to feel they have control, and therefore curtails picky eating.


  2. Take them grocery shopping

    While grocery shopping, you can introduce kids to new fruits and vegetables, and show them how to pick good produce from the bad. You may also get the older kids to have a look at the food labels.

    After the shopping trip, get the kids to put away the food. Make it a habit, and this will help the kids be more comfortable around the kitchen.


  3. Give them small tasks in the kitchen.

    Let the kids help you wash and peel vegetables, measure ingredients, or even get them to stir the pot on the stove under your supervision. This gives them a sense of purpose, and develops their skill in making their own meals.

    Turn meal prep time into play time for younger kids by asking them to find and count food items for you, e.g. 3 carrots, 2 apples, 2 eggs etc.
